7 Nights, South Luangwa & Bangweulu Wetlands
South Luangwa
Upon arrival at Lusaka International Airport you will be met by our representative who will assist you with baggage and direct you to the domestic check-in counters for your flight to Mfuwe in the South Luangwa, this flight will take just over an hour.
Day 1 - 3
Tafika Camp
To get to Tafika you can either be driven from Mfuwe Airport which will take about 2 hours, mostly as a game-drive, or opt for a 15 minute flight (at additional cost) into Lukuzi Airstrip which is just 15 minutes’ drive from camp. The Camp itself, set on a bend in the river, is simple by design with 6 reed and thatch chalets under shady trees, it is outside the National Park but in a game-viewing area, 5 minutes from the park Gate.
Day 3 - 6
Chikoko Walking Camps
The journey from Tafika to Chikoko Tree Camp takes you 8 km upstream from Tafika to a point where you cross the river by boat, the camp is then just a few hundred meters which is conducted on foot. There are no roads in this area of the Park and so all activities from this camp are on foot.
Accommodation is in 3 grass and thatch en-suite chalets raised above the ground within the surrounding Tree Canopies. This will be your home for 2 nights.
Bangweulu Wetlands
Day 6 - 8
Shoebill Island Camp
Your next camp, Shoebill, is situated in the Bangweulu Wetlands. Bangweulu means ‘the place where the water meets the sky’. Completely re-built, the camp is located on the west side of the wetlands on a small island overlooking the main lake, and home to the iconic Shoebill bird. Positioned right on the high flood line in a grove of trees, the camp’s main area opens entirely to the vast plains with lechwe and flocks of diverse waterbirds within arm’s reach. There are 4 tents, (2 double, 2 twin) set on the back of the island. Shoebill offers walking, deep hull photographic canoeing, mokoro as well as genuine impromptu community visits - it’s not just ‘for the birders’.
Access is by charter plane to Chikuni, Shoebills’ own private airstrip.
